Little Compass: First Year
Last updated: October 15, 2026
Little Compass is made by GrayBear Studio. This policy explains what the app collects, what it does not, and where information goes.
The short version
Little Compass has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Your baby's name, date of birth, and everything you record stays on your phone. The only information that leaves your device is what is needed to answer a question you asked.
What stays on your device and is never sent anywhere
The following is stored only on your phone, in the app's own storage, and is not transmitted to GrayBear Studio or anyone else:
- Your baby's first name, date of birth, gestational weeks if you enter them, and the priorities you pick during setup
- Your guidance history
- Your medication log
- Your notes
- Your solid food log
- Your checkup dates, custom appointments and reminder settings
- Your display preferences
Deleting the app removes all of it. There is no cloud backup and no way for us to recover it.
What leaves your device, and when
When you ask the AI feature a question. The text of your question, limited to 300 characters, and your baby's age in days are sent to our server and then to Anthropic, which generates the answer. Your baby's name is never included. Emergency wording is caught before it reaches the AI and routed to fixed safety guidance instead. The AI feature asks for your agreement before it is used for the first time, and you can decline and still use the rest of the app.
When you check a product recall. The brand, product description and model number you type are sent to our server and on to the CPSC, FDA and NHTSA databases.
When you look up a car seat inspection station. The ZIP code or state you type is sent to our server and on to NHTSA. This is typed by you. The app does not read your device location.
What we store on our servers
Little Compass uses Firebase, a Google service, for its server functions. We store:
- An anonymous account identifier. The app signs you in anonymously so we can count usage fairly. It is a random identifier. It contains no name, no email address and no device identifier, and it is not linked to you.
- Usage counts against that anonymous identifier: how many questions were asked today and this month. No question text.
- Cached answers. To avoid asking the AI the same thing twice, answers are stored for up to 30 days under a one-way cryptographic hash of the question and age band. The original question text is not stored and cannot be recovered from the hash.
- Total monthly cost across all users, as a single running number.
- An anonymous record of recall searches containing the product category, whether a model number was supplied, how many matches were found, and whether each database answered. It does not contain the brand, product or model text you typed, and it is not linked to your identifier.
What we never collect
- No name, email address, phone number or postal address
- No account, password or sign-in of any kind
- No device location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone access
- No analytics, usage tracking, crash reporting or advertising software of any kind. The app contains no third party tracking code.
- No data from Apple Health or any other health app
- Nothing is sold, rented or shared with advertisers or data brokers, because none of it is collected
Children's privacy
Little Compass is designed for parents, not children. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The information you record about your baby stays on your phone.
Third parties that process information
- Google Firebase hosts our server functions and the anonymous data described above.
- Anthropic generates AI answers from the question text and age you send. Anthropic does not receive your baby's name or your identifier.
- CPSC, FDA and NHTSA receive the product or ZIP code details you type when you use those features. These are US government databases.
How long information is kept
Cached answers expire after 30 days. Usage counts against an anonymous identifier are kept while the identifier is active. The anonymous recall search record is kept as an aggregate. Everything on your device stays until you delete the app.
Your choices
- Decline the AI feature and use the rest of the app
- Delete the app to remove everything stored on your device
- Write to privacy@graybearstudio.com to ask what is held against your anonymous identifier, or to have it deleted
Purchases
Little Compass does not sell anything today. When Pro subscriptions are added, Apple will process the purchase and we will receive only the aggregate sales reports Apple provides to developers, which do not identify you. This section will be updated before that ships.
